Swiss authorities warn against buying Lenovo computers for upcoming procurement

Switzerland's intelligence service cautions the federal government about purchasing Lenovo laptops and related equipment.

Switzerland's Federal Intelligence Service has alerted federal officials to potential risks associated with buying Lenovo-branded computers and peripherals. The warning is part of a broader review of a major procurement program that aims to replace thousands of laptops, desktop PCs and monitors across public administrations. The contract, expected to last until the mid-2030s, will also cover technical assistance, user training and software licensing.

In addition to Lenovo, the intelligence service has highlighted concerns about Chinese firms Huawei and Alibaba. Lenovo, which acquired IBM's PC business in 2004, is currently seen as a leading candidate for the deal.

Why it matters

The warning could shape Switzerland's future tech procurement and affect market opportunities for Chinese vendors.
