Swiss cantonal elections boost UDC seats ahead of 2027 federal vote
The Swiss People's Party (UDC) added seats in several cantons after the recent cantonal elections, strengthening its position before the next federal election.
Following the recent cantonal elections, the UDC increased its representation in the cantons of Bern, Glarus, Graubünden, Nidwalden and Obwalden, adding several seats in each. The only canton where the party saw a decline was Thurgau, where it lost three seats, yet it continues to command a substantial portion of the cantonal parliaments. Overall, the UDC now occupies more than a third of the seats in the cantonal legislatures.
The elections occurred a year after the 2023 federal vote and precede the upcoming national election in 2027. The results highlight the party's continued strength across most regions of Switzerland.
