Swiss cinema gains global traction as English-language projects multiply

Swiss Films highlighted a surge in international co-productions and a growing shift toward English-language movies at this year’s Venice festival.

Swiss cinema is enjoying heightened domestic and international attention, as evidenced by a strong presence at the Venice festival. Seven Swiss projects entered the Gap-Financing Market and two joined the Immersive Market, underscoring the country’s active role in global co-production. Nicola Ruffo, director of Swiss Films, pointed to the success of films like Petra Volge’s ‘Late Shift,’ which sold over 670,000 tickets abroad by the end of 2025.

The festival showcased a range of works, from the Oscar-entry ‘Who Is Still Alive’ to Wim Wenders’ documentary on architect Peter Zumthor. Emerging filmmakers such as Flurin Giger and Ursula Meier are developing internationally oriented projects, while a dedicated panel will discuss the implications of an increasing shift toward English-language filmmaking for Swiss directors.
