Swiss export growth steadies in September as jewelry sales surge and imports jump
Switzerland's September export figures improved modestly, led by a sharp rise in jewelry shipments, while imports, especially pharmaceuticals, surged.
September saw Swiss exports edge up following a sharp drop in August, with the most pronounced increase coming from jewelry and precious-metal goods. Exports to the United States also returned to growth after a near-30% fall the month before. Imports, however, accelerated markedly, largely because of a surge in chemical and pharma products, the latter more than doubling in value. This import boom reduced the country's trade surplus to its lowest level in recent months. The Bundesamt für Zoll und Grenzsicherheit reported these movements, highlighting the sectoral shifts in the Swiss trade balance.
Why it matters
The shift shows how sector-specific demand can quickly alter Switzerland's trade balance and economic outlook.
