Swiss farmers brace for tougher stance as Mercosur trade deal is rejected

Switzerland is seeking to broaden its trade horizons, according to the Federal Council and its head Guy Parmelin, as traditional partners such as the European Union and the United States become less reliable. The government’s push includes deeper ties with Asian and South American economies. In a recent vote, the National Council turned down the proposed free-trade pact with Mercosur, with 96 votes against 86.
Opposition came from left-leaning legislators and a majority of the PLR, who rejected proposed agricultural compensation measures. Detractors claim the agreement would erode national sovereignty and undermine the country’s system of direct democracy, while also leaving farmers without sufficient safeguards.
