Swiss federal road agency evaluates over 120 highway-entrance traffic lights
The Federal Office for Roads (Astra) is assessing more than 120 sites for ramp-dosing traffic lights on motorway entries, accepting possible back-up on local roads.
The Swiss Federal Office for Roads (Astra) is reviewing more than 120 locations for ramp-dosing traffic lights, known as RaDo, to regulate vehicle flow onto the Autobahn and reduce congestion and accidents. The pilot scheme, already in use at 15 sites in Bern, Zurich and Aargau, will be extended to additional sites in the Zurich, Basel and western Swiss regions, with implementation planned over the coming years but no firm schedule.
Astra explicitly accepts that the approach may cause back-up on downstream cantonal and municipal roads, a point highlighted in an internal memo. Cantonal authorities, including Basel-Stadt and Schaffhausen, claim they were not involved in the planning and view the potential local bottlenecks critically. Political figures such as Franziska Ryser and Peter Schilliger support the concept in principle but stress the need to balance highway efficiency with impacts on local networks. Astra says any concrete projects will be coordinated with affected cantons and municipalities to mitigate adverse effects.
Why it matters
The plan could reshape traffic flow on Swiss highways while shifting congestion onto local streets, affecting commuters and regional planning.
