Swiss football captain Granit Xhaka under investigation for alleged fake Covid certificate

Investigators from the Luzerner Staatsanwaltschaft have launched a case against Granit Xhaka, the 33-year-old captain of Switzerland’s national football team, on suspicion of using a counterfeit Covid-19 vaccine certificate. Police allege that a physician in Lucerne produced the falsified documents and that forensic evidence was uncovered during a raid on the doctor’s office. The inquiry will determine whether Xhaka’s actions constitute fraud or document forgery.

Xhaka’s spokesperson, Andreas Bantel, says the player is fully cooperating and holds a letter from the treating doctor confirming vaccinations on 25 January 2022 and 11 November 2022. The suspect is expected to be questioned in early October, while both Xhaka and the doctor retain the presumption of innocence.
