Swiss glaciers shrink over 5% in 2026 after unprecedented heatwave

A joint report by the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network and the Swiss Commission for Cryosphere Observation found that Swiss glaciers lost more than 5% of their ice in 2026, continuing a decade-long trend of rapid melt. The Aletsch Glacier recorded its largest melt on record, while Glacier de Tsanfleuron thinned by more than four metres. Over the past five years, glaciers have lost almost 20% of their volume, raising concerns about future water availability in the region. Scientists note that the accelerating loss adds to broader climate impacts across Europe.
