Swiss government authorizes emergency draw from airport fuel reserves

The federal authorities have permitted the use of mandatory fuel stockpiles for Zurich Airport until 1 November to address a supply shortfall.

A shortage of aviation fuel at Zurich Airport has led the Swiss federal government to grant temporary access to the mandatory fuel reserves. The authorization, effective from 15 October until 1 November, enables the airport to draw from these stockpiles to maintain operations. The shortage stems from rail outages and delays, particularly on routes entering from Germany.

Reduced Rhine water levels have shifted extra freight onto heavily used railway corridors, preventing timely replenishment of fuel supplies. The federal Office for Economic Supply announced the measure, emphasizing its limited duration. No further details on the volume of fuel released were provided.

Why it matters

Ensuring fuel availability keeps Zurich Airport operational, vital for travel and the Swiss economy.
