Swiss lakes shrink dramatically as drought triggers maximum environmental alert

Switzerland's lakes are receding sharply due to severe drought, prompting the Office fédéral de l’environnement to issue a level-4 alert and forcing some municipalities to limit drinking-water use.

Rising temperatures and low rainfall have left lakes such as Joux and Brenets with exposed shorelines and stranded boats. Despite recent rainfalls, the water deficit remains critical. The Office fédéral de l’environnement has placed the country under the highest alert level, four out of four. Rivers are drying up, and several towns are now imposing strict drinking-water restrictions to cope with the shortage.

Why it matters

The drying of Swiss lakes signals escalating water scarcity risks for Alpine communities and ecosystems.
