Swiss National Bank to allocate up to six billion francs annually to government and cantons from 2026
The Swiss National Bank (SNB) will be able to transfer as much as six billion francs each year to the Confederation and cantons for the 2026-2030 period, subject to its financial health.
The Swiss National Bank and the Federal Department of Finance have signed a fresh convention allowing the SNB to remit up to six billion francs per year to the Confederation and cantonal governments for the fiscal years 2026 through 2030, provided its balance sheet permits. The arrangement keeps the distribution rules unchanged, with a core payment of two billion francs triggered by a minimum profit of two billion francs.
Further payments of one billion francs each may follow once the SNB’s profit climbs to ten, twenty and thirty billion francs respectively. In line with the National Bank Act, the SNB will reduce its mandatory reserve-provision ratio from ten percent to eight percent beginning in 2026, subject to annual approval by the Bank Council. Cantonal authorities were informed of the new terms in advance.
Why it matters
