Swiss pension fund software breach may have exposed data of multiple institutions

A cyberattack on software provider PK Softech has raised concerns that several Swiss pension funds, including Migros, Post and the federal Publica, could be affected by a data breach.

Swiss regulators are probing a cyberattack on PK Softech, the software company that handles pension data for numerous public and private funds. The breach was first disclosed by the federal Publica pension fund, prompting other clients such as Migros and the Post pension scheme to verify the extent of any data loss. Both the Bernische Pensionskasse and the Bernische Lehrerversicherungskasse reported no signs of stolen information, though they cannot completely rule it out.

The city of Zurich's pension fund, which currently uses a different platform but intends to migrate to PK Softech by 2027, is conducting tests to determine if its upcoming transition could be compromised. PK Softech officials said they are cooperating closely with investigators and specialist firms. For now, the affected pension funds assure members that no immediate steps are needed.

Why it matters

Potential exposure of pension data could affect millions of Swiss retirees and raise concerns about cybersecurity in financial services.
