Swiss Social Democrats launch initiative to strengthen protection against violence toward women

At its Thun congress, the SP adopted a proposal to boost prevention and coordination among federal, cantonal and specialist services for women’s safety.

During its party congress in Thun, the SP unveiled an initiative designed to reinforce prevention strategies and collaborative efforts among the federal authorities, cantonal governments and specialist institutions addressing violence against women. The resolution was adopted without dissent by the party’s delegates. Tamara Funiciello, co-president of the SP women’s wing, described femicides as merely the visible portion of a larger iceberg of violence, citing ongoing assaults, beatings, demeaning behavior and discrimination.

She argued that political inaction must end, noting that protecting women requires financial investment. Justice Minister Beat Jans echoed the call, stating that safeguarding women is a duty of the legal system and society, and urged men to assume responsibility, highlighting that the vast majority of perpetrators are male. The initiative seeks additional resources to support victims and to ensure that protection is not left to chance or regional disparities.

Why it matters

The proposal seeks systemic changes to better protect women from gender-based violence in Switzerland.
