Sydney Indigenous elder Mick Mundine arrested on historic child sex allegations

Mick Mundine, a prominent Indigenous leader and CEO of the Aboriginal Housing Company, was taken into custody in Redfern over alleged sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl in 1986.

Authorities arrested Mick Mundine, a well-known Indigenous elder and long-time chief executive of the Aboriginal Housing Company, on Thursday in Redfern and transferred him to Newtown Police Station for interrogation. Investigators are probing allegations that Mundine sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl in June 1986. The 79-year-old Bundjalung man, who has overseen the housing provider for the majority of its five-decade existence, is also linked to notable relatives such as boxer Tony Mundine OAM, former rugby player and boxer Anthony Mundine, and former politician Warren Mundine.

Mundine’s tenure includes overseeing the contentious $70-million Pemulwuy Project on Redfern’s The Block, which sparked protests over perceived gentrification. He has held board positions with the Aboriginal Medical Service and the Redfern Aboriginal Corporation. Support services for sexual assault survivors are listed for those affected.

Why it matters

The arrest of a high-profile Indigenous leader raises serious concerns about historic abuse and its impact on community trust.
