Sydney Marathon medals mistakenly show Munich stadium instead of local venue
Runners in the 2026 Sydney Marathon will receive finisher medals that feature Germany’s Allianz Arena rather than Sydney’s Allianz Stadium, a mistake the organisers say they will not correct.
A design flaw has been discovered on the 2026 Sydney Marathon finisher medal: the reverse side, meant to illustrate the city’s Allianz Stadium, actually portrays the Allianz Arena in Munich. Organisers said the mistake was discovered only a week before the event and, rather than replace the medals, they will distribute them as-is, calling the error “unfortunate” but also “unique.” They emphasized that the medal’s front features a blue-and-white Indigenous motif by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, who clarified his work was limited to the front and lanyard.
No apology was issued, and officials expressed gratitude for participants’ light-hearted response. The marathon, which expects a record 40,000 runners, will start at North Sydney Oval, cross the Harbour Bridge, loop through the city, pass Kingsford and Centennial Park, and conclude at the Sydney Opera House.
Why it matters
The mix-up highlights how design oversights can affect large public events and participants' experience.
