Synthetic drug labs generate massive chemical waste, harming ecosystems

A new OFDT report warns that illegal production of synthetic drugs creates up to thirty times more chemical waste than the drugs themselves, contaminating water, soil and air.

The French Observatory of Drugs and Addiction Trends (OFDT) released findings showing that clandestine labs for synthetic narcotics produce a disproportionate amount of hazardous waste. This waste is discarded without control, leading to pollution of aquatic systems, soils and the atmosphere. Even trace concentrations can disrupt biodiversity. The study draws on data collected worldwide to illustrate the scale of the problem.

Why it matters

Drug-manufacturing waste is a hidden source of pollution that threatens ecosystems and public health worldwide.
