Synthetic 'SpudCells' Grow and Divide, Marking New Milestone in Lab-Made Biology
Researchers at the University of Minnesota have created synthetic cells that can feed, grow and split using only non-living chemicals, a first for artificial biology.
Kate Adamala, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota, reported that her laboratory succeeded in constructing synthetic cells—dubbed SpudCells—from isolated biological parts and raw chemicals. Unlike previous attempts, these constructs can independently acquire nutrients, expand, and divide based on internally encoded instructions. The cells are fragile, halting activity if conditions deviate from an exact set of parameters, and they rely on continual supply of building blocks.
Adamala views the achievement as a proof-of-concept that engineered cells could one day be programmed to manufacture pharmaceuticals, plastics and other resources, reducing dependence on petrochemicals. She likens the milestone to the launch of one outlet, illustrating how a modest first step can open a new era of biological engineering.
