Syria and Libya agree to reopen embassy in Tripoli and revive joint committee

In talks held in Tripoli, Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah of Libya's Government of National Unity and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani agreed to reopen Syria's embassy in the Libyan capital, which has been shut for 14 years, and to revive the Libyan-Syrian Joint Higher Committee that coordinates political, economic and social ties. The agreement also includes establishing a Syrian consulate in Benghazi, raising the level of diplomatic representation.

Discussions covered security cooperation, counter-terrorism, consular services, the status of prisoners, detainees and refugees, and outstanding financial dues between institutions. The Syrian minister met Libya's oil and gas minister and the chief of the investment authority to explore energy and investment collaboration. Dbeibah described the outcome as the beginning of a "new chapter" based on shared interests and practical cooperation.
