Syria detains 15 former military and security officials in latest crackdown
Syria's ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba announced the arrest of 15 former officers, including ex-head of Division 24 Mohammad Dib Afouf and former anti-corruption court chief Ghazi Badr Abdel Saleh.
Syria's Ministry of Interior spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba disclosed on Al-Ekhbariya TV that fifteen individuals have been taken into custody. Among those named are Mohammad Dib Afouf, who once led Division 24 and the Air Defence Directorate, and Ghazi Badr Abdel Saleh, a former head of the Anti-Corruption Court. The list also includes several former heads of Air Force intelligence, former political security officers, members of the Republican Guard and three former military pilots.
The statement did not specify when each person was arrested or the accusations they face. This wave of detentions continues a pattern of recent operations aimed at former regime officials, such as a September arrest of a former military intelligence officer and a June report of many ex-regime soldiers being detained.
Why it matters
The arrests signal an ongoing purge of former regime figures, affecting Syria's security apparatus and political stability.
