Syria to Publish First Nationwide Landmine Map as Clearance Drive Expands
Syria's emergency ministry announced that a comprehensive map of landmine-contaminated areas will be released soon, supporting de-mining and reconstruction efforts.
At the Syria International Security and Safety Exhibition, Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed al-Saleh revealed that Syria will soon issue its first detailed map showing where landmines and explosive remnants of war are located. The map, produced under a three-year national strategy, will direct de-mining operations, help restore agricultural land and facilitate the safe return of displaced residents. Syria is working with Germany and Ukraine to acquire advanced clearance techniques, with recent Ukrainian team visits and upcoming Syrian delegations to Ukraine.
The ministry also seeks to set up a joint emergency operations centre with Turkiye to improve coordination on fires, floods and other disasters along their 910-kilometre border. Additionally, the “Syria Without Camps” programme aims to close remaining displacement camps by the end of 2027, combining infrastructure rebuilding with broader reconstruction plans.
Why it matters
Mapping mines is crucial for protecting civilians, restoring livelihoods and advancing Syria's post-war reconstruction.
