Szuverenitásvédelmi Hivatal accused of non-competitive legal contracts and dubious study commission

The Sovereignty Protection Office, led by Lánczi Tamás, paid two law firms for advice and a study without proper competition, according to a government report.

A recent government inquiry revealed that the Szuverenitásvédelmi Hivatal, under Lánczi Tamás, disbursed funds to two law firms for advisory services and a research report without meaningful competition. The office issued invitations to a limited pool of lawyers, setting only a few days for offers. One firm was compensated for two in-office consultations attended by the same sixteen individuals, while the other received payment for a study on the phenomenon of the EU’s covert jurisdictional expansion, completed within seventeen days.

Officials noted missing or incomplete paperwork, yet the full fees were still paid. The Justice Ministry reported that the commissioned study cannot be found in its archives. The investigation also highlighted irregularities in other spending, including large payments to senior staff and the use of a VIP card for personal expenses.

Why it matters

It raises concerns about misuse of public funds and lack of transparency in government procurement.
