T-Mobile and Jio launch first global 5G standalone roaming service

T-Mobile and Indian carrier Jio have achieved a world-first by establishing a 5G standalone (SA) roaming link, supported by Syniverse’s interconnection platform. The SA arrangement bypasses legacy 4G elements, delivering higher speeds, reduced latency and more stable connections for customers moving between the two networks. Ankur Kapoor of T-Mobile called the milestone a major step toward universal 5G connectivity, while Mark Yarkosky of Jio described it as a transformational development that goes beyond traditional roaming.

John Wick of Syniverse said the company’s security and mediation tools were crucial for making the service commercially viable. The collaboration is expected to enable new cross-border services for consumers, businesses and emerging IoT and AI applications.
