Tadej Pogacar Withdraws from Vuelta After Crash on Stage Eight
World champion Tadej Pogacar left the Vuelta a Espana after a fall that injured his left shoulder and face with about 33 km remaining.
During the eighth stage of the three-week Vuelta, Pogacar was riding in the peloton when he went down roughly 33 kilometres from the finish. The 27-year-old sustained a shoulder injury and a cut on the left side of his face. He attempted to remount but ultimately walked to an ambulance, marking his first ever Grand Tour abandonment. The Slovenian had started the day nearly four minutes ahead of his nearest rival.
Why it matters
Pogacar's exit ends his chance to win all three Grand Tours in a single season, a rare feat in cycling.
