Taiping council says three elephants at Japanese zoo are healthy and well-cared for

The Taiping Municipal Council rejected claims of neglect, stating that elephants Dara, Amoi and Kelat are in good health at Tennoji Zoo in Japan.

According to Mohamed Akmal Dahalan, president of the Taiping Municipal Council, the three elephants transferred to Japan’s Tennoji Zoo are healthy and have adjusted well since their March arrival. He emphasized that observed head-swaying can reflect food anticipation rather than distress, and that Kelat’s two musth periods, which caused temporary weight loss, are typical and have been followed by weight gain. The council dismissed accusations of neglect, abuse, or hormone use, citing a nutritionally complete diet and regular veterinary monitoring.

Enrichment activities and unrestricted access to exhibition and night enclosures have been provided since the elephants were reunited on September 20. Dahalan urged the public to base concerns on credible information, warning that unfounded claims could harm conservation cooperation. Ongoing monitoring will continue to ensure accurate updates on the elephants’ welfare.

Why it matters

The statement addresses public concerns about animal welfare and clarifies the health status of high-profile zoo elephants.
