Taipower chief urges tech sector involvement in electricity policy decisions

Taipower chairman Tseng Wen-sheng said the electricity industry must be part of technology-sector decision-making as power demand rises with computing and AI.

At a news conference ahead of the Net-Zero Taiwan and Energy Taiwan shows, Taipower chairman Tseng Wen-sheng urged that the electricity sector be integrated into technology-industry decision-making. He explained that computing power is essential for the tech field, especially semiconductors, making reliable electricity a strategic component of supply chains. Tseng said Taipower should move beyond merely supplying power to actively participating in industrial planning, understanding tech business models, financial structures and partnerships.

He highlighted the need for joint discussions on renewable energy procurement, certificates and storage, noting that investment timelines have compressed from about ten years to as little as three. While asserting Taiwan’s current generation capacity can support industrial growth, he cautioned that AI applications could cause exponential demand spikes, particularly if firms build private data centers. He added that the grid must not only generate enough power but also deliver it efficiently alongside renewables and storage.

Why it matters

Coordinating power policy with tech needs is vital for Taiwan's semiconductor edge and overall energy security.
