Taiwan appoints Vice Admiral Yuan as Coast Guard deputy to boost maritime defence
Vice Admiral Yuan Sheng-hua has become the first active-duty Navy officer to serve as deputy director-general of Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration, aiming to improve naval-coast guard coordination amid Chinese pressure.
Vice Admiral Yuan Sheng-hua was elevated to his current rank and installed as deputy director-general of Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration, marking the inaugural placement of an active-duty Navy officer in that senior CGA role. The promotion ceremony, led by President Lai Ching-te at the Presidential Office, emphasized the goal of tighter coordination between the Navy and Coast Guard to counter escalating maritime pressure from China.
Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling explained that Yuan's background in naval defence and strategic planning makes him well suited to handle China's gray-zone tactics and the transition from peacetime to wartime missions. The deputy director-general position was created following amendments to the Coast Guard Administration Organization Act in June, intended to advance a sea-air integration strategy, modernise technology, and prepare for operational shifts.
Yuan's prior assignments include deputy chief of staff of the Navy, director of the Strategic Analysis Division, commander of the 192nd Fleet, and head of the Navy's Training and Readiness Division. The agency expects his expertise to enhance intelligence sharing, surveillance, and emergency response across maritime domains.
