Taiwan Boosts Maritime Patrols Around Pratas Islands Amid Rising Chinese Activity

Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration declared that its overall patrol and enforcement capacity around the Pratas Islands has been comprehensively upgraded. A newly built 100-tonne patrol boat was placed at the island after a wharf project finished in July, markedly improving near-shore response. In addition, larger patrol vessels are now deployed on a regular basis to provide layered deterrence and mobile enforcement.

The CGA reported confiscating nine Chinese fishing boats since January, repurposing them for reef monitoring and conservation. Chinese coast guard activity in the vicinity has intensified, the most recent patrol taking place earlier this month. The Pratas Islands, a national park with minimal civilian presence, remain a strategic outpost vulnerable to potential attacks due to their distance from Taiwan.
