Taiwan Coast Guard's Friendship Fleet docks in Palau for joint patrol and diplomatic talks

Two Taiwanese Coast Guard vessels arrived at Palau's Malakal Harbor, where officials will meet President Surangel Whipps Jr. and conduct a joint patrol.

The Coast Guard Administration dispatched its second "Friendship Fleet" to Palau, with the Chiayi and Penghu patrol vessels arriving at Malakal Harbor on Tuesday. The mission follows a 2025 goodwill visit and aims to showcase Taiwan's maritime diplomacy. Deputy Director-General Hsu Ching-chih will head a delegation that includes a meeting with President Surangel Whipps Jr., as well as informal pickleball and swimming contests with local officials.

A banquet on the Chiayi will include a joint flag-raising ceremony. After the reception, the Taiwanese ships will join Palauan law-enforcement units for a coordinated patrol, fulfilling the bilateral coast guard agreement signed in 2019. The CGA highlighted the drills conducted during the voyage to validate crew coordination and vessel performance, emphasizing the importance of such cooperation for regional security.
