Taiwan Donates Decommissioned Patrol Boat to Philippines Amid Rising Maritime Tensions

Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration announced the donation of a retired patrol vessel to the Philippines, marking an uncommon gesture toward a nation without formal diplomatic relations since 1975. The ship, identified as “BLINGNO.1,” was observed briefly departing Kaohsiung Port before returning, appearing disarmed and repainted. CGA officials said the transfer follows standard practice and highlighted earlier donations to the Marshall Islands, Palau and Tuvalu, all of which have official ties with Taiwan.

Su Tzu-yu of the Institute for National Defense and Security Research described the hand-over as part of an international effort to counter China’s “expansionist” gray-zone behavior along the first island chain and in disputed South China Sea areas. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined to confirm whether this is the first vessel given to the Philippines. Additionally, Taiwan plans its inaugural goodwill mission to the Philippines in October 2027, involving about 100 cadets for cultural and maritime exchanges, though the number of ships to be sent remains unspecified.
