Taiwan records over 26,000 elder abuse cases, psychological and physical attacks most common

Government data show 26,684 suspected elder-abuse incidents were reported last year in Taiwan, with psychological and physical abuse leading the tally.

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Taiwan logged 26,684 suspected domestic-violence cases involving people aged 65 or older last year, a jump from 20,182 the previous year. In the first half of this year, 14,292 reports were filed, with psychological abuse representing 44.1%, physical abuse 37.9% and stalking or harassment 25.5%, many cases featuring multiple abuse types. Descendants of the elderly were responsible for 58% of incidents, followed by spouses at 27.1%.

Economic abuse rose sharply to 362 cases, accounting for 1.32% of total reports. Department Director Kuo Tsai-jung linked the problem to family dynamics and resource distribution, urging stronger support and long-term care options. Social workers and expert Wang Hsiu-yen recommend improving caregiver communication, skills, and community engagement to curb abuse and isolation.
