Taiwan's 2027 budget featuring NT$10,000 cash grants moves to legislative committee

The government’s 2027 budget, which allocates NT$10,000 cash payments to eligible residents, was sent to the Legislative Yuan’s committee stage after Premier Cho Jung-tai answered questions.

On Tuesday the Legislative Yuan’s committee received the Executive Yuan’s 2027 budget proposal, which contains a NT$10,000 cash grant for qualifying individuals. Premier Cho Jung-tai fielded lawmakers’ inquiries before the bill advanced. The NT$3.92 trillion budget sets aside NT$235.7 billion for the handouts, asserting that increased tax revenue from rapid growth in technology-related industries—forecast at 11.05 percent for 2026—will cover the cost.

The government says the payments are meant to share the benefits of the booming high-tech sector with citizens, foreign residents with permits, spouses of Taiwanese nationals, and overseas personnel holding Taiwanese nationality. A rival proposal backed by the Kuomintang seeks to double the grant to NT$20,000 but only references “eligible individuals” without specifying criteria.

Why it matters

The budget determines how Taiwan will distribute cash benefits and fund public services amid rapid tech-driven growth.
