Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission blocks Grab's $600 million acquisition of Foodpanda
Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission has halted Grab's planned purchase of Foodpanda's Taiwan operations, citing competition concerns.
In March, Grab announced a US$600 million cash offer to acquire Delivery Hero's Foodpanda delivery platform in Taiwan, marking its first expansion beyond Southeast Asia. On October 21, Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission issued a statement that it would not approve the transaction, arguing that the likely reduction in competition surpasses any overall economic gains. The commission found the safeguards offered by Grab and Delivery Hero inadequate to resolve the competition worries.
Consequently, the proposed acquisition has been blocked, preventing Grab from entering the Taiwanese market through this deal. The decision underscores the regulator's strict stance on maintaining competitive markets in the region.
Why it matters
The block prevents a major ride-hailing firm from dominating Taiwan's food-delivery market, preserving competition for consumers.
