Taiwan's security agency warns of intensified Chinese infiltration and intimidation tactics
The National Security Bureau reported that the Chinese Communist Party is expanding surveillance, intimidation and espionage activities against Taiwanese individuals and businesses.
In a report to the Legislative Yuan, Taiwan's National Security Bureau said the Chinese Communist Party is stepping up transnational repression and "united front" operations aimed at silencing critics on the island. Collaborators are instructed to monitor, film and collect personal information on specific Taiwanese, then employ intimidation tactics such as threatening emails, impersonation, assaults, paint attacks and staged traffic collisions.
The CCP also pursues "united front" outreach, inviting Taiwanese youth and businesses to events in China to promote alignment with Beijing. Espionage activity has surged, with indictments rising to 73 this year and a 91 percent conviction rate, while average sentences have more than doubled. Additionally, Chinese-funded entities have been found operating without approval, and there are numerous cases of talent poaching and technology theft linked to China.
Why it matters
The report highlights growing Chinese pressure on Taiwan, raising security and sovereignty concerns for the island and its allies.
