Taiwan says four more citizens missing or detained in China, total cases reach 449
The Mainland Affairs Council reported four additional Taiwanese whose whereabouts are unknown, detained or whose movement is restricted in China, raising the overall count to 449 cases.
In its weekly briefing, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council said four more of its citizens have become missing, detained or subject to movement restrictions in China, lifting the cumulative figure to 449 cases since January 1, 2024. The breakdown now shows 168 missing individuals, 39 detained for questioning and 242 whose travel freedom is limited. The council highlighted five groups that should be especially vigilant under China’s entry-exit regulations introduced on September 15, covering semiconductor and tech staff, senior business leaders, civil servants involved in cross-strait exchanges, participants in religious activities, and those publicly expressing political views.
The U.S. Department of State updated its Level 2 China travel advisory, warning of arbitrary law enforcement, exit bans and potential arrests. Separately, Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling announced the donation of a decommissioned Coast Guard vessel to the Philippines, stating it will not affect Taiwanese fishermen’s rights.
