Taiwan Snack Maker Kuai Kuai Workers Extend Indefinite Strike Over Plant Relocation

Workers at Kuai Kuai's sole Taiwan factory voted to keep their strike ongoing indefinitely amid unresolved relocation talks.

On Friday, roughly 130 employees of Kuai Kuai Co. at its Zhongli factory in Taoyuan voted in an extraordinary meeting to prolong their strike indefinitely, following a one-day warning action that started at 5 a.m. The strike stems from a dispute over the plant’s relocation after the land and buildings were sold to Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, with the union demanding clear arrangements for workers during the two-year transition.

Mediation attempts by the Taoyuan City Government have failed, and the union claims the company has not engaged in substantive talks, despite management’s assertion that some issues are settled. Kuai Kuai’s owner, the San-Ti Group, and the company’s spokesperson Chan Yi-kuo expressed regret over the strike but said negotiations continue. The Ministry of Labor affirmed workers’ right to strike and called on the company to negotiate in good faith. The outcome will affect the future of Taiwan’s iconic snack brand and its 57-year-old production site.
