Taiwan stock index hits new peak as trading volume eases ahead of holiday

The Taiex closed at a fresh high on Wednesday, while total turnover fell as investors stayed cautious before the long Mid-Autumn Festival weekend.

On Wednesday the Taiwan Stock Exchange's Taiex index climbed 357.12 points, ending the session at 48,157.29, a record high for the market. The advance was led by semiconductor giant TSMC, which added over 300 points to the index after its ADRs rose 1.54 percent, and by other tech firms benefiting from a surge in AI-related demand. Despite the upward move, total trading volume fell to NT$855.95 billion, a decline from the prior day's NT$1.068 trillion, as investors adopted a more defensive stance before the extended Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.

Analysts cited a more than 70 percent year-on-year increase in August export orders as a boost for tech shares, while non-tech sectors faced pressure. Foreign institutional investors recorded a net purchase of NT$37.31 billion on the main board.

Why it matters

The rise shows confidence in Taiwan's tech sector, but lower turnover signals caution ahead of a major holiday.
