Taiwan Tightens Sports Rules to Block Athletes Joining Chinese Teams

Taiwan's Ministry of Sports announced revisions to its cross-strait sports exchange guidelines, embedding the intent of Article 33 of the Act Governing Relations between the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area into Article 7. The change aims to prevent Taiwanese athletes from representing China in international competitions by prohibiting participation in any Chinese organization linked to national identity, United Front activities, or potential security threats.

Violations will be punished under the same act. The ministry also cautioned educational and sports institutions about increasingly sophisticated Chinese United Front invitations, such as fully funded trips and hospitality offers, and advised thorough scrutiny of organizers and event details. It emphasized avoiding national-level events organized by Chinese authorities that could serve United Front goals. Ongoing collaboration with the Mainland Affairs Council will ensure that sports groups and schools receive up-to-date guidance on the revised policy.
