Taiwan urges Europe to forge trusted AI and drone supply chains
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung called for closer Taiwan-Europe cooperation on AI and drone supply chains, citing security and economic benefits.
At the opening of the Formosa Club’s annual gathering, Taiwan’s foreign minister Lin Chia-lung advocated for a joint Taiwan-Europe effort to build trusted supply chains for artificial intelligence and drones, arguing that such collaboration would bolster both economic growth and national security. He pointed to Taiwan’s advanced semiconductor, AI server and nascent drone sectors as natural partners for Europe’s expertise in precision manufacturing and industrial technology.
Citing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a cautionary tale of economic dependence, Lin stressed the need for partners that share democratic values and security concerns. He referenced a proposed technology park in Poland, driven by the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association, which would focus on AI data centres, smart-city infrastructure and electric vehicles. European Parliament member Michael Gahler called for parliamentary support to translate political goodwill into concrete, bidirectional investment frameworks, while maintaining Europe’s existing one-China stance. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Formosa Club will host a follow-up forum on AI and drone cooperation the following Tuesday.
Why it matters
The proposal aims to reduce reliance on hostile powers by linking Taiwan's tech strengths with Europe's manufacturing, affecting global supply chains and security.
