Taiwanese community rallies in New York demanding UN membership
Over 100 Taiwanese Americans, lawmakers and civic groups marched in Manhattan, chanting for Taiwan’s inclusion in the United Nations.
A crowd of Taiwanese Americans, elected officials and civil-society groups took to the streets of Manhattan on Saturday, marching from Times Square to the New York Public Library while shouting slogans like “UN for Taiwan.” The rally was joined by John Silk, the Marshall Islands’ permanent representative to the United Nations, who voiced support for Taiwan’s eventual participation in UN meetings. DPP lawmaker Wang Yi-chuan and Taiwan United Nations Alliance head Shih Shu-hua led the procession, stressing Taiwan’s contributions in semiconductors and technology and calling the event a chance to amplify the island’s perspective near the UN headquarters.
Spectators stopped to photograph and applaud the chants. The march formed part of a broader effort by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to raise awareness of the island’s exclusion while the 81st UN General Assembly is in session.
