Jim Rigby, who has led the church for more than three decades and serves as James Talarico’s spiritual mentor, said the practice is routine for newcomers and praised the version’s handling of gender issues while noting its weaker metaphysical rendering.

The church’s broader theology departs from traditional Christian creeds, with Rigby describing Jesus in unconventional terms and questioning doctrines like the Virgin Birth. Talarico, the Democratic Senate candidate, grew up in the congregation, was baptized there, and has cited the church’s influence on his faith and politics. He has previously described God as non-binary and called himself a “Christian who hates Christianity.” The revelation comes as Talarico’s campaign against Attorney General Ken Paxton remains highly competitive in Texas.
