Taliban morality police detain hundreds for haircuts, beards and dress code violations
The Taliban’s morality police arrested at least 443 people between July and September for alleged breaches of dress and grooming rules, including Western-style haircuts, trimmed beards and failure to wear the burqa.
According to a new United Nations assessment, Taliban morality police carried out 443 arrests between July and September for alleged violations of the regime’s dress and grooming regulations. Men were targeted for Western haircuts and trimmed beards, exemplified by two barbers who spent a month in detention. Women and girls faced over 50 separate actions, including the detention of ten women in Herat for not wearing chadors and a 13-year-old girl held overnight for hijab non-compliance, while a father was arrested because his 12-year-old daughter lacked a burqa.
Authorities also punished individuals for skipping prayers, playing music, or listening to it. The report situates these arrests within a wider pattern of psychological abuse and increasingly harsh enforcement of Sharia law, which has severely restricted women’s education, employment and public presence since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. UN Human Rights chief Volker Türk warned that the cascade of edicts is crushing the rights of Afghan citizens, especially women and girls.
Why it matters
The arrests illustrate the Taliban’s expanding repression of personal freedoms, especially affecting women and girls in Afghanistan.
