Tanya Plibersek reacts to alarming rise in sexual violence in new Australian report

Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek read a mother's letter describing parental anxiety as she responded to the latest Australian domestic and sexual violence report, which shows record-high incidents in 2024.

The minister highlighted a letter from a mother of three who said parenting now feels like watching a disaster unfold. She cited the annual report’s finding that reports of sexual violence reached their highest level ever in 2024 and fell by less than 1% the following year. Over the past 15 years, reported sexual assaults have risen by 64%. Plibersek used the data to underscore the urgency of addressing family and sexual violence across the country.
