Tanzania's first gentleman passes away during cardiac treatment in Zanzibar

Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, died while receiving heart treatment at a Zanzibar hospital, officials announced.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who became Tanzania’s first gentleman when Samia Suluhu Hassan took office in 2021, died on Monday while being treated for a heart ailment in a Zanzibar hospital. Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi confirmed the death and noted that burial arrangements will be made in the family’s native archipelago. President Hassan is serving a second term after a contested 2025 election.

The couple’s four children include three sons and a daughter who serves as a lawmaker. Leaders from neighboring countries, such as Kenya’s President William Ruto and Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye, sent messages of sympathy to the Tanzanian president and her family.
