TAROM welcomes its first Boeing 737 MAX, named Mircea Lucescu, into service

TAROM received its inaugural Boeing 737 MAX 8, flown from Seattle to Bucharest and christened Mircea Lucescu.

On Tuesday, TAROM took delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX 8, completing a two-stage ferry flight from Boeing’s Seattle headquarters with a stop in Keflavík, Iceland, before landing in Bucharest around 19:00 local time. The aircraft has been named “Mircea Lucescu,” while a sister jet expected in September will carry the name “Ivan Patzaichin.” The jets were secured through a leasing agreement signed in 2024 with CDB Aviation, the Irish arm of CDB Financial Leasing Co., Ltd. Each MAX 8 seats 189 passengers and is expected to help standardise TAROM’s fleet and reduce operating expenses, a point highlighted by General Director Costin Iordache. Delivery of the two aircraft had originally been scheduled for December 2025-January 2026 but has been delayed.
