Tasmanian man sentenced for chainsaw threat and confinement of teen in shipping container

Wayne Michael Ludbey received a 14-month jail term, with most of it suspended, for assaulting and locking a 17-year-old in a container and threatening him with a chainsaw.

A Tasmanian court sentenced Wayne Michael Ludbey, 32, to 14 months in prison, suspending ten months for a two-year period, after he admitted to assaulting a 17-year-old in September 2023. The attack began when Ludbey, believing the teen had stolen boots from his property, confronted him on the street, restrained him with his brother Brady, and drove him to a shipping container on his land. Inside, the brothers tied the boy with straps and zip ties, revved a chainsaw against his neck, beat him with a wooden piece, and sprayed him with a hose before locking the container.

Ludbey later called the victim’s father, demanding the return of alleged stolen items and threatening the boy’s life. The teenager survived with minor physical injuries but experienced severe emotional distress. Justice Tamara Jago criticized Ludbey’s lack of remorse and insight, labeling the conduct as premeditated and vindictive, and imposed the custodial sentence despite numerous character references presented by the defense.
