Tata Power expands pipeline to support India's booming data centre and AI demand
Tata Power announced a diversified pipeline of more than 2.8 GW for India's data centre sector, covering renewable power, transmission and distribution projects.
Tata Power is positioning itself as a preferred partner for India's fast-growing data centre ecosystem, unveiling a pipeline exceeding 2.8 GW that spans renewable generation, transmission upgrades and distribution services. The pipeline breaks down into around 430 MW of upcoming load on its distribution grid, 1,236 MW of transmission-linked projects, and 1,150 MW of green energy capacity currently under active engagement.
The firm is collaborating with 18 major global and domestic hyperscaler operators through 29 workstreams to deliver powered land, grid connectivity, storage, cooling and utility infrastructure. In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Tata Power is enhancing its 110 kV and 220 kV networks and constructing a new 400 kV transmission ring to ensure reliable power for large-scale digital facilities, all within a Rs 15,000 crore grid upgradation plan. The Ministry of Power, citing CEA estimates, projects that AI-focused data centres could consume roughly 26.3 GW of electricity by FY2031-32, making energy availability a critical enabler for India's ambition as a global AI hub.
Why it matters
The rollout will shape India's energy landscape as data centres and AI drive massive new electricity demand.
