Tata Sons chair N Chandrasekaran resigns but stays on until term ends
Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran has stepped down, yet will remain in office until his current term concludes in February.
On Wednesday, N Chandrasekaran resigned from his role as chairman of Tata Sons, although he will fulfill the remainder of his term, which expires in February. The resignation comes after Tata Sons delayed a decision on extending his tenure, a delay triggered by a clash with Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata over governance issues, including a request that the conglomerate never become a listed company. Chandrasekaran reportedly declined to provide that commitment, and the parties also disputed the composition of the board.
Tata Sons, the holding entity for more than 30 subsidiaries such as Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors and Air India, did not immediately respond to inquiries, and Chandrasekaran could not be reached. Chandrasekaran has been with the Tata Group since 1987, leading TCS as CEO before taking the Tata Sons chair in 2017. The group has recently faced regulatory scrutiny of Air India, pricing pressure at TCS and a cyberattack on Jaguar Land Rover that disrupted production.
