Tata Trusts' leadership deadlock persists as SDTT meets amid SRTT freeze

The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust will meet Friday while the Sir Ratan Tata Trust remains frozen, delaying the joint nomination needed to pick a new Tata Sons chairman after N Chandrasekaran said he won’t seek a third term.

A meeting of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust is scheduled for Friday, while the Sir Ratan Tata Trust continues to be frozen by the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner over alleged trustee violations. Because Tata Trusts own about 66 % of Tata Sons, the two trusts must jointly nominate three members to the five-member committee that will select a new chairman for Tata Sons. The freeze on SRTT has stalled this joint nomination, leaving the selection process unresolved.

The SDTT gathering occurs a week before the Tata Sons board meeting slated for September 17, which follows chairman N Chandrasekaran’s August 12 letter stating he will not seek a third term ending February 20 2027. Sources say the SDTT agenda will be limited to routine project approvals and is unlikely to address the leadership vacuum. The SRTT freeze also affected Tata Sons’ annual general meeting last month, leading the Registrar of Companies, under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, to extend the AGM deadline to the end of the year, as the AGM requires a representative jointly nominated by both trusts.
