Taylor and Smith build chemistry in hot South Florida workouts ahead of Jets' second season

Mason Taylor and quarterback Geno Smith spent several afternoons each week training together in South Florida during the offseason, hoping to improve their on-field connection for the upcoming Jets campaign.

During the offseason, Mason Taylor and Geno Smith committed to intensive joint workouts in South Florida, gathering several times a week for lengthy sessions on a scorching turf surface. Smith praised Taylor’s willingness to train in the heat, noting the chemistry they are developing will be crucial as he returns as the Jets’ starting quarterback under offensive coordinator Frank Reich. Taylor, drafted in the second round last year, saw limited production as a rookie, catching his sole touchdown from running back Breece Hall amid a weak offensive unit.

This year, with Smith at the helm and the addition of first-round tight end Kenyon Sadiq—who has been sidelined by hernia surgery—Taylor aims to solidify his role, highlighted by coach Aaron Glenn’s praise for his improved catching and blocking. The tight-end group, which also includes Jeremy Ruckert and Jelani Woods, is expected to provide the Jets with versatile options in both the passing and running games.

Why it matters

Improved quarterback-tight end rapport could boost the Jets' offensive effectiveness this season.
