Taymyr declares emergency after storm floods diesel tank, spilling up to 200 tons into Arctic bay

On September 15, a diesel storage tank on the shore of Khatanga Bay in the northern village of Syndassko was damaged by rising flood waters caused by a storm, causing a leak of roughly 170-200 tons of fuel. The spill prompted the Krasnoyarsk Krai government to declare a regional state of emergency in the Taymyr area. The tank belongs to Taymyr Alliance Trading, which provides electricity to several settlements; authorities reported no immediate danger to residents’ health and confirmed that the village’s drinking water source remains uncontaminated.

Alexey Chlenov, head of Taymyr, noted no obvious environmental damage and said power supplies are unaffected, with reserve fuel sufficient for ten days. The regional Emergency Situations Ministry reported the incident and investigators have launched a criminal case for breaches of environmental protection rules.
